Psy referred to prosecution over alleged proxy collection of sleeping medication, agency pledges full cooperation

Singer Psy has been referred to prosecutors on allegations that he had prescription sleeping medication collected on his behalf by a manager. His agency, P NATION, stated that it will fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

On June 2, a representative from P NATION addressed reports regarding Psy's referral to the prosecution, saying, "The police investigation into the alleged violation of the Medical Service Act related to the proxy collection of sleeping medication has concluded. We will actively cooperate with any subsequent investigation conducted by the prosecution."

According to the Seodaemun Police Station in Seoul, Psy was referred to prosecutors without detention on May 29 on charges of violating the Medical Service Act. Also referred were three medical professionals, including a professor and a junior doctor at a university hospital in Seoul, as well as two company employees.

Authorities allege that from 2022 through 2024, Psy received prescriptions for psychotropic medication from a university hospital in Seoul without undergoing in-person consultations. He is accused of having third parties, including his manager, collect the prescribed medication on his behalf.

The medication in question is reportedly a psychotropic drug used to treat conditions such as sleep disorders and depression. Under South Korea's Medical Service Act, prescription documents for such medication may only be received by patients who have personally undergone a medical examination.

After the allegations first became public, Psy's side issued an apology, stating that having prescription sleeping medication collected by a proxy was "a clear mistake and oversight." However, the agency maintained that Psy had taken the medication in accordance with a physician's prescription and emphasized that there had been no proxy prescribing.

The case has now been forwarded to prosecutors for further review and investigation.
