'Teach You a Lesson' debuts globally, tops pre-release buzz rankings despite controversy over source webtoon
by hjang · allkpopThe Netflix original series 'Teach You a Lesson' premiered worldwide on June 5, 2026 (KST), following strong pre-release attention fueled by both audience anticipation and ongoing controversy surrounding its source webtoon.
Based on the popular webtoon 'Get Schooled,' the series gained early traction for its depiction of school violence and stylized action sequences. Ahead of its release, it ranked No. 1 in viewing intent with 10%, according to a May 2026 OTT content survey conducted by Consumer Insight, significantly outperforming Genie TV’s 'Doctor Seom Boy' at 3%.
The 10-episode series follows a fictional Ministry of Education task force known as the Teachers’ Rights Protection Bureau, which intervenes in severe cases of school violence and institutional abuse.
Kim Moo Yeol stars as Na Hwa Jin, a former special forces operative turned field inspector, alongside Jin Ki Joo as Im Han Lim and Lee Sung Min as Education Minister Choi Kang Seok. Pyo Ji Hoon plays Bong Geun Dae, a bureau official supporting field operations.
Set in a vocational high school where bullying and violence have become routine, the story centers on student Kim Hyung Joo, whose case exposes deeper systemic failures in the education system. As Na Hwa Jin is deployed to the school, he outlines the bureau’s mission to protect students from becoming victims of violence, before taking direct action against both perpetrators and connected criminal elements.
The series is directed by Hong Jong Chan and written by Lee Nam Gyu, known for 'The Light in Your Eyes' and 'Daily Dose of Sunshine.' He said the project was inspired by real-world reports of school violence, with the fictional bureau serving as a narrative lens focused on victims’ perspectives.
Lead actor Kim Mu Yeol described his character as outwardly cold but driven by a strong sense of justice. Actor Kim Nam Gil was initially considered for the role of Na Hwa Jin before Kim Mu Yeol was ultimately cast.
The production team also addressed backlash against the original webtoon 'Get Schooled,' which faced criticism over allegations of sexist framing, racially insensitive depictions, and episode removals, as well as restrictions on some North American platforms. Hong Jong Chan emphasized that the adaptation was approached with heightened sensitivity and careful revision.
Blending social commentary with action-driven storytelling, 'Teach You a Lesson' marks a high-profile Netflix release that has already drawn significant international attention.
