SHINee sets comeback schedule amid divided response to Key's return
by hjang · allkpopKey is officially returning to the entertainment industry with his group SHINee following a six-month hiatus stemming from a medical controversy. SHINee is scheduled to release their sixth mini-album, 'Atmos', across various music platforms on June 1. This marks the group’s first new release in approximately a year, following last May’s single 'Poet | Artist'. Ahead of the album release, SHINee will meet fans through their eighth solo concert, 'The Trilogy I - 2026 SHINee WORLD VIII: [The Invert]', held at KSPO DOME in Seoul from May 29 to May 31.
SHINee recently signaled their full-group return by releasing a schedule film on their official social media on May 11. In the video, Key appears as a cheerful weathercaster, outlining the group’s upcoming promotional schedule and confirming his return to activities. Key had previously suspended all television appearances last December after it was revealed that he had received at-home treatments from an unlicensed practitioner colloquially known as the "Injection Aunt." His agency, SM Entertainment, stated that he was unaware the individual lacked a valid medical license. Although the violation was not intentional, Key stepped down from his fixed roles on tvN’s 'Amazing Saturday' and MBC’s 'I Live Alone' to reflect on the situation.
Key has sparked a divided public response with his return. Some netizens have criticized the relatively short period of reflection, arguing that it amounted to little more than a break ahead of album promotions. Others, however, defend him, noting that he was misled by the practitioner and is not subject to any legal charges. Industry insiders suggest that while the timing of his return may appear premature, his future conduct will ultimately shape public sentiment. One music industry official commented, "Regardless of the circumstances, the decision to return has been made, so what he shows moving forward is crucial. He needs to demonstrate genuine remorse and sincerity." Another insider added that returning through group activities is a natural and lower-risk approach, stating, "SHINee is his strongest support system, and resuming activities through planned group promotions does not seem like an overreach."
