“Who are they?” Inappropriate question at Cannes ‘HOPE’ press conference sparks controversy

A press conference for Na Hong Jin’s new film 'HOPE,' a Competition entry at the 'Cannes Film Festival 79th edition,' was overshadowed by controversy after a foreign journalist made remarks that were widely perceived as disrespectful toward members of the cast.

The press event took place on May 18 (local time) in Cannes and was attended by director Na Hong Jin alongside a high-profile ensemble including Hwang Jung Min, Jo In Sung, Jung Ho Yeon, Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell and others involved in the production.

Tension reportedly escalated when the journalist, after referencing Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, gestured toward other cast members and stated that he did not know who they were. The comment, delivered in front of an international press audience at one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals, immediately created an awkward atmosphere in the room.

Cast members were visibly affected by the moment. Jung Ho Yeon and Taylor Russell were seen exchanging uncomfortable smiles, while Hwang Jung Min and Jo In Sung appeared noticeably composed but tense as the remark landed.

The situation further intensified when the journalist directed additional comments toward Fassbender and Vikander, who are married in real life. He suggested whether the production had cast them as a “package deal” or secured them together for cost-related reasons, a remark that drew further discomfort in the room.

Director Na Hong Jin quickly responded, firmly rejecting the implication. He clarified that each actor was individually invited to join the project and emphasized that the production team made deliberate and separate efforts to secure every cast member, underscoring the independent nature of the casting process.

Despite the press conference controversy, 'HOPE' has received a strong reception in Cannes. Following its official screening, the film reportedly earned a standing ovation lasting approximately seven minutes, signaling an enthusiastic audience response.

Early festival reactions have also placed the film among the higher-rated entries in the Competition lineup, with some industry observers suggesting it could emerge as a contender for major awards, including the Palme d’Or.

Set in a remote border region, 'HOPE' follows Bum Seok, a local administrative office head who investigates reports of a tiger sighting from villagers. As tensions escalate, the entire community is drawn into a rapidly unfolding crisis. Hwang Jung Min portrays Bum Seok, Jo In Sung plays village youth Sung Ki, and Jung Ho Yeon appears as police officer Sung Ae, while Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton take on key alien roles within the story.
