Washington State trooper from Hawaii killed in line of duty

A Washington State trooper who was born and raised in Hawaii was killed in the line of duty in Tacoma Friday night.

Trooper Tara-Marysa Guting, 29, was standing outside of her patrol car investigating a two-vehicle crash when she was struck by another vehicle just before 7:30 p.m. on State Route 509, south of the Port of Tacoma, according to the Washington State Patrol.

People at the scene rendered aid but the trooper died from her injuries. officials said.

According to the State Patrol, Guting was born on July 19, 1996, to Russell and Cheryl Hirata in Honolulu and she graduated from Mililani High School in 2014.

She enlisted in the Army National Guard later that year, “where she served honorably as a Signal Intelligence Analyst until Oct, 21, 2022,” WSP officials said in a news release posted on social media. “Her dedication to service and commitment to her duties were evident throughout her eight-year military career.”

Since 2019, she was married to Timothy Guting, who is a deputy state fire marshal in Washington state.

Seattle radio station KOMO reported that the driver involved in the crash stayed at the scene and that no one was taken into custody. The Tacoma Police Department is investigating the crash.

WSP has made arrangements to bring Guting’s family in Hawaii to Washington for Guting’s funeral services, KOMO reported.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to Timothy, Tara’s extended family, her friends, her academy classmates, to District 1 Capt. (J.J.) Gundermann, and his entire team,” said WSP Chief John R. Batiste in the news release.

“We will never forget Badge #720 — Trooper Tara-Marysa Guting,” he said. “The sky has poured rain on us all for the past two weeks … And with this loss, now tears flood our souls.”

This was the 34th time in WSP’s 105-year history that an officer died in the line of duty, officials said.
