Ruby Rose says police came to her school after she tried to help a badly injured boy at 15, and classmates began calling her a “baby killer.” She was eventually cleared, but the boy’s mother still didn’t want her at his funeral.

Speaking on the Off the Vine podcast, the 40-year-old actress recalled being at a playground with a childhood friend, smoking their first cigarette, when she spotted what she thought was a doll hanging from the equipment. Closer up, she realized it was a boy around 4½ years old, bleeding from his ears, nose and mouth.

Rose picked him up, and the friends brought him to adults at a nearby house. “I thought I’d saved his life because there was a big deep breath,” she said.

The boy received CPR while they waited for an ambulance. He later died in hospital after a prolonged period of brain death, Rose recalled.

As police questioned Rose, the accusations followed her into school. “I was just breaking down left, right and centre,” she said.

According to Rose, the boy’s older brother eventually remembered what had happened: he’d pushed his brother down a slide, the younger boy had become caught on a nail, and he’d tried to free him. Seeing the blood, the older brother panicked and ran away.

Rose said he’d experienced dissociative amnesia, a condition in which trauma or stress can cause someone to lose memories. For a couple of weeks, he couldn’t remember the incident. When his memory returned, he went to the police.

Rose said the experience led her to study psychology. Even after she was cleared, she was excluded from the funeral at the mother’s request: “So, everyone else went except for me.”
