Melinda French Gates walked onstage at the start of Olivia Rodrigo’s headline set and doubled the festival’s charity total on the spot. Her surprise $10 million match pushed the one-day haul to $20 million.
French Gates matched Rodrigo’s $10 million dollar for dollar through her philanthropy, Pivotal, and the two shared the stage as she did it. Rodrigo called her “generous and brave” and said she was “totally floored.”
The all-women festival ran August 29 at Great Park in Irvine, California. Every artist played for free, and 100% of net proceeds plus the match go to the partners as unrestricted operating support, so the groups can spend it however they need.
Each of the 10 organizations gets an equal share: Baby2Baby, Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Center for Reproductive Rights, FreeFrom, Jhpiego, Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health, National Domestic Workers Alliance, National Institute for Reproductive Health, National Women’s Law Center and Planned Parenthood.
The match fits the work French Gates has prioritized since leaving the Gates Foundation in 2024. She’s pledged $2 billion to women and families and directed more than $600 million to women’s health in the last two years alone.
