How Long Will Travis Kelce Keep Playing Tight End? He Turns 37 Today and Has Said He Wants to Play “Until the Wheels Fall Off”

The average NFL career lasts about three seasons, and Kelce just started his 14th. Tight end is the position that ages worst: you block like a lineman, run routes like a receiver, and take hits in the middle of the field from linebackers and safeties paid to end your day.

Tony Gonzalez retired at 37. Jason Witten pushed to 38. Most elite tight ends are finished by their early 30s.

Kelce’s peak ran roughly ages 29 to 33, including seven straight 1,000-yard seasons and the tight-end record of 1,416 yards in 2020. That streak ended after 2022.

Since then it’s been 984, 823, and 851 yards, with 13 touchdowns across three years. He’s a future Hall of Famer who’s still useful, which isn’t the same as the best tight end in football anymore.

Quitting crossed his mind after 2024, and it returned after 2025, the year Kansas City finished 6-11 and fell short of the playoffs for the first time since 2014. His contract is built so he can walk: about $12 million guaranteed this year, up to $15 million with incentives, structured with void years so it reads as a three-year, $54.7 million deal on paper. June 2027 is where the real decision lands.

For now he’s still Chiefs, still No. 87. The career line sits around 1,096 catches, 13,248 yards, and 84 receiving touchdowns, with three Super Bowls, 11 Pro Bowls, and seven All-Pros. Through four games this year he has 16 catches for 246 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Yesterday against the Raiders he had 2 catches for 15 yards in a 30-27 win that moved the Chiefs to 4-0. They’re on a bye, so the birthday week is off. Next game is October 18 against the Chargers.

This is his first birthday as Taylor Swift’s husband. They married July 3 at Madison Square Garden, Adam Sandler officiating, both in Dior couture by Jonathan Anderson. The wedding supposedly happened but only once hell has fully frozen over will the photos be released.
