Whitney Rose says she delayed ending her marriage for a long time because she feared what telling her children would do to them. When the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star finally spoke with daughter Bobbie, 16, and son Brooks, 13, the conversation changed how she saw their family’s future.

“Once I had the conversation with my children, it went so well, and I was so surprised by their reactions. I was shocked, and I realized that this is a good thing for them too,” she said.

Whitney, 40, filed for divorce from Justin Rose, 57, in Utah on October 6, after 16 years of marriage. Their separation became public in July. She said the decision took months to voice, and even moving into the guest bedroom felt like a major step.

The couple’s arrangement has kept the children in their primary home while Whitney and Justin take turns staying there. In September, she explained that they share 2 places and rotate between them. She’s also submitted a parenting plan for the court’s potential approval.

Whitney said time apart over the summer helped her understand what she wanted for herself and her family. She believes divorce can be positive for both partners, and she expects Justin to remain her friend.

Her advice to parents considering separation comes from the fear that kept her waiting: “So, I’d say, if you need it, ask for it, and don’t be fearful of the children. Children know and see more than you think.”
