Russell Brand was “petrified” during his first night in custody after his November 5 conviction for rape and 3 counts of sexual assault, an unnamed source said. He’s reportedly being held at London’s HMP Wandsworth, where the Independent Monitoring Board called the prison accommodation “inhumane” in its 2024 report.
During his admission, he reportedly underwent a strip search, received food and toiletries, and was allowed a 3-minute phone call with his wife, Laura. She supported him during the trial.
Inmates reportedly directed the chant “There’s a Brand new nonce on the wing!” at him. The insult uses “nonce,” British slang for a sexual offender.
Brand denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty in a case concerning offenses from 1999 to 2009. He was acquitted on 2 other counts of rape and 1 count of attempted indecent assault. An October 14, 2026, courtroom sketch shows Brand at Southwark Crown Court during the trial.
The board’s assessment covered June 1, 2023, through May 31, 2024, and was published on August 22, 2024. Most prisoners shared cells designed to hold 1 person, with 2 men routinely occupying that space.
The Howard League for Penal Reform lists 1,457 prisoners at Wandsworth against a Certified Normal Accommodation, or CNA, figure of 894. CNA represents the number the prison service considers it can accommodate safely and decently. The listed population works out to roughly 163% of that level.
During the board’s reporting year, shortages of prison clothing meant some men waited 2 or 3 weeks for a complete fresh set. Sheets and towels were also scarce.

The board documented damp, unsanitary shower areas, poor airflow and mold. Vermin could get in through damaged flooring.
Prisoners could be confined to their cells for as many as 22 hours each day, with too few staff sometimes preventing outdoor exercise. Heating worked intermittently through winter. In summer, temperatures sometimes rose above 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
For the 2023 to 2024 reporting period, the prison recorded 442 assaults against prisoners and 518 against staff. There were 998 incidents of self-harm involving 302 men.
The prison also recorded 10 deaths, including 6 described as “apparently self-inflicted.” These figures cover the period before Brand’s arrival.
He’s scheduled to be sentenced on Monday, November 9.
