Nathan Fielder says Elizabeth Holmes called him from prison the week before his documentary opened in theaters, leaving him with one cryptic message: “I trust you.”
Fielder told Wired the call came the week before You Can See Everything opened, from a number his phone identified as Elizabeth Holmes. The Theranos founder is serving her sentence at Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas, and he says he hadn’t heard from her in over six months.
By his account, she asked how he was doing, then asked how he felt about the film coming out. She told him she’d heard things but hadn’t really read anything about it. “And then, at the end, she said to me, ‘I trust you,'” he said.

He answered, “OK, thanks,” and said the two of them went on to talk about her children before she repeated the line. Pressed on what she meant, Fielder said he didn’t have the words to even speculate.
Holmes can’t be called back from prison, so she has to phone again if a call gets missed. There’s no recording of the exchange, and Holmes hasn’t confirmed or denied it.
Fielder and co-director Lance Oppenheim spent Holmes’ final 34 days before prison filming her and her partner, Billy Evans, for the documentary. She reported to Bryan on May 30, 2023, and is due at a halfway house in August 2027.
