Elon Musk Says Tesla Will Wind Down Cybertruck Production in Texas. He Hasn’t Said If the Truck Is Done.

Tesla plans to scale back Cybertruck production at its Texas factory in 2027, a move that leaves a question unanswered: will the pickup be discontinued or built somewhere else? Elon Musk says the factory space will go toward making more of Tesla’s self-driving Cybercab vehicles.
Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill suggested the truck’s future lies in the technology it contributed to that project. “Cybertruck was an incredible technology development platform and lives on through Cybercab,” he wrote on X.
Musk also replied to a user who praised the truck while describing it as being discontinued next year. “But the Cybertruck fleet will be around for a long time,” Musk wrote. He hasn’t specified whether production will move elsewhere or end completely.

The shift follows weaker-than-expected sales for a pickup that reached customers in 2023 after delays. Musk has continued to champion it, calling it “way more awesome than people realise” in March and “the best product Tesla has ever made to date” in April.
Its stainless steel body and angular shape helped distinguish it, but the truck has struggled to gain ground in the U.S. pickup market. It’s also faced several recalls, including a 2025 recall covering more than 46,000 vehicles because a piece of trim could come loose. The Cyberbeast model costs around $102,000 in 2026.
The production pivot comes 7 years after the Cybertruck’s 2019 unveiling, when glass shattered during a demonstration meant to prove the windows’ strength. Musk said Tesla received 146,000 orders that year while the truck was still in development.
