Apple Original Films has officially titled its Fleetwood Mac documentary Fleetwood Mac: The Chain, marking the first time the band has signed off on a film telling its story from the inside. Directed by Frank Marshall, the project centers the five members of the band’s best-known lineup and is set for a global debut on Apple TV early next year.

The documentary is built around the band itself rather than outside commentators. Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, all Grammy winners and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, look back on the 50-plus years that followed their chance meeting in 1974. Archival material that has never been made public sits alongside exclusive new interviews, carrying the story from their record-breaking studio sessions and tours up to the present day.

The title is a deliberate choice. “The Chain” is the only track on Rumors that credits all five members as writers, and the film uses it as a symbol for a bond that held even as the band’s rise to fame strained nearly every relationship within it. Timing reinforces the point, with the premiere landing on the 50th anniversary of the Grammy-winning album’s release.

Structurally, the film moves through the band’s peaks and collapses while isolating what each member contributed to a sound that has sold more than 220 million records worldwide. It also digs into the harder question of why five artists kept returning to one another, and kept producing landmark work, despite pressures from the industry and from within the group that repeatedly threatened to end it.

Behind the camera, Marshall, a five-time Academy Award nominee and recipient of the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, also produces through The Kennedy/Marshall Company. He’s joined by White Horse Pictures’ Nigel Sinclair (No Direction Home: Bob Dylan), Nicholas Ferrall (Stax: Soulsville U.S.A.) and Jeanne Elfant Festa (Lucy and Desi), along with Kennedy/Marshall’s Aly Parker (The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart). Cassidy Hartmann of White Horse and Tony Rosenthal of Kennedy/Marshall serve as executive producers, while Diamond Docs’ Mark Monroe writes and executive produces.

Fleetwood Mac: The Chain premieres globally on Apple TV on Friday, January 29, 2027.
