The blocky cinematic universe is officially expanding. Following the massive, record-breaking box office success of 2025’s A Minecraft Movie, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have formally unveiled the title for the franchise’s highly anticipated next chapter: A Minecraft Movie Squared. Announced directly from the film’s New Zealand set by stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa during a recent Minecraft Live broadcast, the sequel promises to dive even deeper into the beloved sandbox game’s endless lore when it hits theaters on July 23, 2027.
The original live-action adaptation proved to be an absolute commercial juggernaut, shattering video game adaptation records with a $163 million domestic opening and ultimately grossing nearly $960 million worldwide. Capitalizing on that momentum, director Jared Hess has returned to helm the sequel, co-writing the script alongside Chris Galletta. Fans can expect the core group of portal-hopping misfits to return, with Black reprising his role as the legendary expert crafter Steve and Momoa returning as former gaming champion Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison.
While specific plot details remain tightly under wraps, the cast has teased that the new adventure will explore entirely new biomes and deeper layers of the Overworld. Joining returning cast members Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge is a major new addition: Kirsten Dunst. The acclaimed actress steps into the pixelated landscape to portray Alex, the famous female counterpart to Steve, replacing Kate McKinnon who briefly originated the role in the first film’s post-credits scene.
To bridge the gap between the theater and the millions of active players worldwide, Warner Bros. and Legendary also announced a unique interactive campaign alongside the title reveal. Through a new creator-focused contest, fans are being invited to construct their own unique designs in Minecraft. The winning creation will be featured directly in the upcoming movie or its end credits, and the winner will receive a private screening of the film.
With filming currently underway in New Zealand and the passionate global community already participating in the creative process, the foundation is set for another massive box office hit. A Minecraft Movie Squared is officially scheduled to punch its way into cinemas worldwide on July 23, 2027.
