“I cannot believe we managed to pull this off,” Zach Braff told the crowd who sold out the Greek Theatre for the Garden State 20th Anniversary Concert, “and you guys are in for a really, really, really special night.”
Braff, who wrote, directed, and starred in the 2004 indie movie as Andrew Largeman, wasn’t kidding either — Garden State fans witnessed a once-in-a-lifetime tribute show on March 29 that included nearly all of the artists and bands featured on the Grammy-winning soundtrack, including a few surprise guests. If you didn’t make it to the show, the concert will be available to watch on the streaming platform Veeps starting on April 6.

Laufey surprised fans with a cover of Coldplay’s “Don’t Panic,” while The Milk Carton Kids performed their incredible cover of “The Only Living Boy in New York,” Simon & Garfunkel’s classic. Remy Zero reunited for their first performance together in over a decade, while Natalie Portman introduced The Shins for one of the last sets of the night.
“Now, perhaps no other band gained more momentum and notoriety from the success of the Garden State soundtrack than a little group from Albuquerque, New Mexico, called the Shins,” Portman said, later ending with a nod to her character Sam’s famous quote, saying “20 years later, I say to you once again, you gotta hear this song, it’ll change your life.”
