Artists have long had mixed feelings about being the subject of retrospectives.

When the Italian sculptor Maurizio Cattelan was given a career-spanning survey by New York’s Guggenheim in 2011, he reported that it made him feel he was already dead. “You see your life passing in front of your eyes, but it’s curated by someone else,” he said.
