In a spotless workshop in Beijing’s northern suburbs, workers in lab coats assemble medical devices designed by an Australian company that is cashing in on one of China’s biggest problems.

Around the world, governments are contending with ageing populations, but the problem is more acute in China, where plummeting birthrates mean fewer future workers to support a rapidly growing cohort of retirees.
