YouTube expands its likeness detection to all creators over 18 years of age
The rampant use of AI these days means celebrities and even content creators have to be extra mindful. You never know when you could be misrepresented by deepfake videos made using your likeness. Fortunately, content platforms like YouTube have ways to detect deepfakes.
Likeness Detection
Recently, Google expanded access to its Likeness Detection feature for YouTube users via the YouTube Partner Program. In case you didn't know, that's the monetisation platform for YouTube content creators. Likeness Detection is an "industry-first tool" that helps you detect AI-generated videos using your likeness. Upon detection, you can then request the video's removal. It was first made available for civic leaders and journalists, before expanding to the entertainment industry and now to content creators in general.
To summarise, Likeness Detection helps with:
- Identifying misuse of your likeness - It can detect when someone is using your face/likeness in AI-generated videos.
- Protecting your identity: Allows you to request the removal of an offending/unauthorised content via YouTube Studio.
- Protecting your viewers: Prevents your videos from being misled by fake videos.
When will you get access to likeness detection?
According to YouTube, the Likeness Detection feature will be rolled out to all creators over 18 years old in the coming weeks. Once it's available, creators can access the feature by following the steps below:
- Go to YouTube Studio
- Look for Content detection from the menu, then select "Likeness", followed by "Start now"
- Give YouTube permission to use likeness detection
- Complete the one-time verification process
