Alibaba Cloud Launches KaryaWAN AI Challenge in Malaysia
Alibaba Cloud recently announced the KaryaWAN AI Challenge, a nationwide initiative designed to accelerate AI adoption, spark creative innovation, and nurture Malaysia’s next generation of digital talent. Backed by the National AI Office (NAIO), the program reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the country’s AI ecosystem.
The Meaning Behind KaryaWAN
The name KaryaWAN draws inspiration from “karyawan,” a term for creators and artists, symbolizing human creativity. Paired with Alibaba Cloud’s Wan visual generation AI model, the challenge represents the fusion of human imagination and artificial intelligence, empowering a new wave of AI-driven storytellers and builders.
Powered by Wan2.7 Video Generation
At the heart of the competition is Alibaba Cloud’s Wan2.7 video generation model. Creators, developers, filmmakers, and AI enthusiasts are invited to experiment with AI-driven storytelling and explore real-world applications across industries. Participants will compete for RM24,000 in cash prizes and trophies, with winners to be announced at the end of June 2026.
Sam Majid, Head of the National AI Office, emphasized that the challenge aligns with Malaysia’s ambition to become an AI Nation by 2030. He noted that initiatives like KaryaWAN translate national strategy into action by enabling talent to experiment, innovate, and build real-world AI capabilities, laying the foundation for a future-ready digital economy.
Choong Hon Keat, General Manager of Malaysia at Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, highlighted the company’s commitment to supporting Malaysia’s digital ecosystem. He explained that the challenge aims to foster innovation, encourage practical AI applications, and contribute to workforce development by connecting aspiring innovators, industry leaders, and government stakeholders.
A Multi-Stakeholder Effort
The KaryaWAN AI Challenge is more than a competition. It is positioned as a talent activation platform, bridging advanced AI capabilities with creative development.
