Cybercrimes Bill 2026 approved by Dewan Rakyat, covers deepfakes and AI manipulated images
The Cybercrimes Bill 2026 was approved by the Dewan Rakyat in Malaysia today with penalties for deepfakes and AI manipulated images but must clearly show criminal intent and consequences. Disclosure of data can only be carried out through written notice on the risk that the data could be deleted or altered if no action is taken immediately. The bill is aimed at strengthening existing laws and won’t override existing laws such as the Official Secrets Act 1972.
Enforcement
According to Bernama, while MCMC or the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission will expedite removal of unlawful content, the lead enforcement agency will remain the Royal Malaysia Police. NACSA or the National Cyber Security Agency will act as the strategic coordinator while Bank Negara Malaysia and other agencies will provide support.
We hope that this might help stem the current rise in cybercrimes and cyber attacks, or at least have authorities better prepared, but what do you think? Would it help much? Share your thoughts in the comments below and stay tuned to TechNave.com
