Russia Scales Back Victory Day Parade, Drops Military Hardware Display
· novinite.comRussia will scale back this year’s Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, with the traditional display of military hardware removed from the May 9 parade in Red Square, according to the country’s Defence Ministry.
Officials said the usual column of tanks and other military vehicles will not take part in the event due to what they described as the “current operational situation,” without offering further explanation. The decision marks a significant departure from previous years, when the parade has been used to showcase Russia’s military capabilities.
Despite the absence of heavy equipment, the ceremony will still include a formation of servicemen from military academies and different branches of the armed forces, alongside an aerial segment over the capital.
The Defense Ministry also confirmed that the broadcast of the event will feature footage from Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, continuing a practice of linking the parade to current military operations. The event is expected to conclude with a flyover by Sukhoi Su-25 aircraft, releasing smoke in the colors of the Russian flag.
Victory Day on May 9 is one of Russia’s most significant national commemorations, marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. The annual parade in Moscow traditionally highlights the Soviet Union’s role in that victory and is also used by the Kremlin as a platform to project national strength and reinforce official narratives about its current geopolitical stance.
While Russia celebrates on May 9, most European countries, including Ukraine, mark the end of World War II on May 8, known as Victory in Europe Day.
