NEET-PG aspirant dies by suicide day before exam, says she was depressed in note

A 26-year-old NEET-PG aspirant from Andhra Pradesh died by suicide in a Hyderabad hostel a day before her exam. Police say a purported note mentioned long-term depression, while no link to the test has been confirmed.

A 26-year-old NEET-PG aspirant from Andhra Pradesh died by suicide at a private hostel in Hyderabad on Saturday, a day before she was scheduled to appear for the postgraduate medical entrance examination, police said.

The deceased was identified as Yashwita, a native of Kurnool district. She had completed her MBBS and had been living at a private hostel near RTC Cross Roads in Hyderabad, where she had been preparing for the NEET-PG examination for several months.

According to police, Yashwita allegedly consumed a poisonous substance inside her hostel room. She was found unconscious after her father, who was unable to contact her over the phone, alerted the hostel authorities.

Hostel staff subsequently found her in the room and rushed her to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared her brought dead.

SUICIDE NOTE RECOVERED BY POLICE

Police said a purported suicide note was recovered from the hostel room. According to preliminary information, Yashwita had written that she had been suffering from depression since her intermediate years.

Police said the note did not specifically refer to the NEET-PG examination or indicate that the upcoming test was a reason for her death.

Her father had reportedly spoken to her on Saturday morning and was planning to accompany her to the examination centre the following day. The incident came to light later in the day when he was unable to reach her over the phone.

The NEET-PG 2026 examination is scheduled to be held on Sunday, August 30, with medical graduates across the country appearing for the postgraduate entrance test.

CASE REGISTERED, POLICE TRYING TO ESTABLISH TIMELINE

The Chikkadpally police have registered a case and begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Yashwita's death. Officers are examining the purported suicide note and other evidence recovered from the hostel room.

Police are also seeking to establish a timeline of events leading up to her death and are speaking to hostel staff and people who may have been in contact with her.

Authorities have not confirmed any link between her death and the NEET-PG examination. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge after the police complete their inquiry.
