At least six people were killed and one person was injured after a portion of a three-storey chawl (row tenement) collapsed in Mumbai's Mankhurd area amid heavy rains on Sunday night, officials said.

The incident took place at around 8.30 pm at Chawl No 5 in Janta Nagar, behind Hanuman Mandir, in Mankhurd. Earlier, officials had said that four to five people were feared trapped at the scene.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), two to three tenements forming part of the three-storey structure caved in, triggering a rescue operation. Preliminary information indicated that people were trapped under the debris.

Personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), police, the BMC ward office and 108 ambulance services were mobilised to the site to carry out rescue and relief operations.

The BMC said four women and one man were brought dead to the civic-run Shatabdi Hospital. Another man was declared dead at the BMC-run Rajawadi Hospital.

One injured man is undergoing treatment at Rajawadi Hospital, officials said.

Officials said the collapsed structure was a chawl, an old, low-cost housing block with long balconies and single-room tenements.

Search and rescue operations were continuing to ascertain if more people remained trapped under the debris, officials said.

Local BJP corporator Navnath Ban said one more person was still feared trapped under the debris. He added that the rescue operation was facing challenges due to heavy rains.
