Thai teen kills grandparents, then guns down 6 more at school before shooting self

Police said the student who killed six people, including teachers and students, in a school shooting in Thailand had earlier murdered his grandparents at home. The investigators also informed that the attacker died by suicide after the massacre.

At least seven people, including the suspected gunman, were killed and 15 others injured after a student opened fire at a school in Thailand on Friday before taking his own life, according to a national police official.

Police said the attacker had earlier shot dead his grandparents at their home before arriving at Debsirin Nonthaburi School on the northwestern outskirts of Bangkok and opening fire.

According to the investigators, the gunman fired 26 rounds during the attack, while another 34 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene. Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong said the victims included both teachers and students.

Scenes of panic unfolded outside the school as students rushed out of the campus while emergency personnel loaded the injured into ambulances. Teachers were seen consoling one another as rescue teams attended to the victims.

An 18-year-old student told Reuters he initially mistook the gunfire for firecrackers or loud banging noises. "I didn't think it was a gun at first. There were many shots: bang bang bang. Then it went quiet. Then it started again," he said.

National Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Trirong Phophan confirmed that the suspected shooter was among the dead and said 15 people sustained injuries in the incident.

Emergency responder Kiatikhun Verapongpradith said his team arrived while the shooting was still underway and treated students suffering gunshot wounds to their backs, chests and arms.

Rescuers also found a male teacher dead on an upper floor of the school and a female teacher with gunshot wounds to her chest and arm.

Despite administering CPR for around 30 minutes, the woman could not be revived and was later taken to hospital, he said.

According to district authorities, Debsirin Nonthaburi School had around 3,100 students and 147 teachers during the 2025 academic year. Deputy Education Minister Akkharanan Kannakittinan said authorities were coordinating assistance for those affected.

The shooting marks Thailand's second attack at a school this year. In February, a teacher was killed and a student injured in a shooting at a school in the country's south.

Thailand has witnessed several deadly shootings in recent years despite periodic government efforts to tighten gun control. In 2022, a former police officer killed 36 people, including 22 children, in an attack on a daycare centre in northeastern Thailand.

More recently, a gunman killed five people at a Bangkok market in July 2025 before taking his own life, while a 14-year-old fatally shot two people at a Bangkok shopping mall in 2023. In 2020, a soldier killed 29 people during a shooting rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima.
