ABOUT SIR EXERCISE IN KARNATAKA

On June 30, the SIR exercise was launched in Karnataka, covering 5.54 crore registered voters across the state. The exercise, the first of its kind in Karnataka since 2002, involved Booth Level Officers (BLOs) visiting households to collect enumeration forms and verify voter details.

When the draft roll was released on August 24, the electorate stood at 4.46 crore. As many as 1.08 crore names had been left out and classified under the Absent, Shifted, Dead, Duplicate and Others (ASDDO) category.

The next stage involved inviting claims and objections and verifying voters whose records were either unmapped with the previous electoral roll or flagged for logical discrepancies.

The Election Commission identified 43.81 lakh such voters and issued notices asking them to establish their eligibility. The verification and hearing process concluded on October 22, paving the way for the final list to be published today.
