Russell holds off Verstappen to win Azerbaijan GP, cuts Antonelli gap to Antonelli

George Russell claimed a dominant Azerbaijan GP victory, holding off Max Verstappen after late pressure to secure Mercedes' third win of the season. Isack Hadjar finished third, while Kimi Antonelli recovered to fifth after starting 16th.

George Russell held off a late charge from Max Verstappen to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, securing his third victory of the Formula One season and closing the gap to Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli at the top of the championship standings.

Russell converted pole position into a lights-to-flag victory, but what had looked like a comfortable afternoon became a tense battle after two safety car periods bunched up the field. Verstappen, who had started eighth, finished just 0.196 seconds behind the Mercedes driver after putting pressure on him throughout the final laps.

Isack Hadjar completed the podium for Red Bull in third, marking an impressive return after missing the previous three races with a wrist injury.

RUSSELL RESISTS VERSTAPPEN

Russell had appeared in complete control during the opening stages, quickly building a sizeable advantage over McLaren's Oscar Piastri, Verstappen and Hadjar.

The complexion of the race changed on lap 31 of 51 when Williams driver Alex Albon crashed, bringing out the safety car and wiping out Russell's 11-second advantage.

Verstappen immediately moved into second when racing resumed, passing Piastri at the first corner, but Russell maintained the lead.

Another safety car followed almost immediately after Franco Colapinto locked up and collided with Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly. Gasly's car then collected reigning world champion Lando Norris, forcing both drivers to retire.

Norris was furious with the incident and called for Colapinto to be banned. Colapinto was handed a 10-second penalty, which will instead become a five-place grid penalty at the next race in Malaysia because he failed to finish.

At the second restart, Verstappen was right behind Russell and remained within striking distance all the way to the chequered flag.

"We had a good race, a tricky first stint on the mediums (tyres) but we got a good restart," Verstappen said. "Then the final lap George lost boost and I got close, but it was not enough."

Russell, however, held his nerve to secure the eighth victory of his career and his first since the Austrian Grand Prix in June.

"It's amazing to be back on the top step of the podium," Russell said.

"Every race since the (summer) break I have gone from strength to strength and I feel more like myself again."

ANTONELLI RECOVERS, HADJAR RETURNS

Russell's victory also had championship implications. Antonelli, who leads the standings, finished fifth after starting 16th following a rare crash in Friday qualifying. Russell reduced the gap from 81 points to 66 after 15 races.

Antonelli had previously produced a remarkable recovery drive from 19th to first at Monza, but could not repeat that feat in Azerbaijan.

Hadjar took advantage of Piastri's late mistake to claim third. Piastri, who had started third, locked up and ran into the escape area, eventually finishing 14th in a difficult race for McLaren.

"It has been a very long six weeks since I injured myself," Hadjar said. "It was the right time to come back, I felt strong, I took it step by step to gain the confidence."

The result marked another podium for the 21-year-old, who had also finished on the podium in Monaco.

Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari, while Lewis Hamilton took sixth. Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad was seventh after making contact with teammate Liam Lawson, sending the New Zealander into a spin.

Esteban Ocon finished eighth, ahead of Haas teammate Oliver Bearman, giving the team a double points finish. Williams' Carlos Sainz completed the top 10.
