When a top-of-the-line brand is set to release a product or gadget, leaks and rumours typically begin to surface ahead of the launch. But yesterday, something took that to an entirely new level. Google is expected to unveil the Pixel Watch 5 this August, alongside the Google Pixel 11 phones. However, just a few months before the smartwatch's official debut, a scuba diver exploring the waters near the island of St. Martin made a remarkable discovery — a Google Pixel Watch 5, recovered from the bottom of the ocean.
On X, Randy Pitchford — who goes by the handle @DuvalMagic — shared images of the watch, writing, "A friend of mine found this watch (Pixel Watch 5) a few days ago underwater while scuba diving near the island of St. Martin." The watch's display couldn't be fully explored, as the battery was reportedly drained. However, the post suggests it retained just enough reserve power to display the correct time.
Pixel Watch 5 design
In terms of design, the images Pitchford shared on X show the watch with a perfectly circular case and a large, glossy black display. The bezels seem to be slim, allowing the display to take centre stage. The band is a white or light grey silicone sport strap, featuring a perforated dot pattern throughout its length. The presence of perforations in the strap not only adds a visual lightness to the overall look but could improve breathability and comfort during physical activity. The combination of the dark circular case against the white perforated band creates a sharp contrast that feels both athletic and refined.
What we can expect from the Pixel Watch 5
According to previous leaks and reports, the Pixel Watch 5 may be available in 41mm and 45mm size options, similar to its predecessor.
The biggest upgrade is expected to come under the hood. Rumours suggest Google may replace Qualcomm's Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 processor with a custom Tensor-based chip designed specifically for wearables. The new chipset is expected to focus on better power efficiency, improved AI capabilities, and enhanced performance for health and fitness features.
The smartwatch is also tipped to run Wear OS 7 out of the box and could bring deeper Gemini AI integration. Reports suggest AI-powered health insights, smarter fitness tracking, and improved voice interactions may be among the headline features. Existing features such as Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Google Maps, Wallet support, and Fitbit-powered health tracking are also expected to return.
Battery life could see further improvements through software and chipset optimisations rather than a larger battery. Leaks indicate that the larger 45mm model may continue to offer up to 40 hours of usage, while the 41mm variant could deliver up to 30 hours on a single charge. Storage is expected to remain unchanged at 32GB.
