Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 launched at Rs 1.45 crore, 585bhp PHEV offering over 100km EV range

Mercedes-Benz India has launched the AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ at a starting price of Rs 1.45 crore, introducing its first plug-in hybrid AMG sedan with 585hp and over 100km EV range.

Mercedes-Benz India has expanded its performance portfolio with the launch of the new Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+, marking the arrival of the first electrified AMG E-Class in the country. Available in two variants: Performance Edition and Racing Edition, the plug-in hybrid performance sedan is priced at Rs 1.45 crore and Rs 1.48 crore (both ex-showroom), with deliveries commencing immediately.

The launch also underlines Mercedes-Benz India's continued "powertrain agnostic" strategy, offering customers a choice of internal combustion, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric models depending on their requirements. According to Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and CEO Santosh Iyer, the AMG E 53 Hybrid combines the performance expected from an AMG with the efficiency and practicality of a plug-in hybrid, making it equally suitable for daily commuting and spirited driving.

Powertrain and performance

The AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ is powered by a 3.0-litre, inline six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 449bhp, paired with a 120kW electric motor integrated into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission. Together, the powertrain develops a combined system output of 585bhp and 750Nm of torque, while the RACE START function temporarily boosts output to 612bhp.

Mercedes-Benz claims the sedan accelerates from 0-100kmph in just 3.8 seconds, with the top speed electronically limited to 250kmph. Buyers opting for the AMG Driver's Package can increase the top speed to 280kmph.

Over 100km electric range

A 400-volt battery pack with a gross capacity of 28.6kWh (21.2kWh usable) allows the AMG sedan to travel over 100km (WLTP) in pure electric mode. The electric motor can propel the car up to 140kmph, while an 11kW AC onboard charger comes as standard.

Mercedes-Benz says the battery has been designed to balance everyday electric driving with high-performance operation, reserving a portion of its capacity for short bursts of electric boost during spirited driving. The battery also supports regenerative braking to recover energy.

AMG chassis and driving technology

The AMG E 53 Hybrid comes equipped with AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive, and active rear-axle steering as standard. The rear wheels can steer opposite to the front wheels by up to 2.5 degrees at lower speeds for improved agility and in the same direction at higher speeds for better stability.

Drivers can choose from multiple drive modes including Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Slippery and Individual, along with hybrid-specific Electric and Battery Hold modes. The AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package further adds an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential, dynamic engine mounts, AMG high-performance composite brakes, an AMG Performance steering wheel and the RACE START function.

Exterior and interior

Visually, the AMG E 53 Hybrid features an illuminated AMG-specific grille, wider front fenders, an aggressive AMG front bumper with larger cooling ducts, "Turbo Hybrid" badging, AMG rear diffuser, spoiler lip and quad circular exhaust outlets. It rides on 20-inch AMG alloy wheels, while the AMG Night Package II and DIGITAL LIGHT system are offered as standard. Customers can choose from six exterior paint finishes.

Inside, the cabin gets electrically adjustable AMG sports seats finished in ARTICO and MICROCUT upholstery with red contrast stitching, AMG-specific graphics and displays, AMG TRACK PACE, hybrid-specific energy and charging screens, a Burmester 4D surround sound system with 17 speakers and 730W output, rear sunblinds and an electrically operated rear windscreen blind.

Mercedes-Benz partners Indian Padel Tour

Alongside the vehicle launch, Mercedes-Benz India also announced a multi-year title partnership with the Indian Padel Tour for the 2026-27 season.

The Mercedes-Benz Indian Padel Tour will comprise 19 tournaments across 10 cities, including 10 City Opens, five Grand Slams and four Special IP events, beginning in Mumbai in August 2026 and concluding in Bengaluru in June 2027. Mercedes-Benz customers will receive exclusive access to padel courts, dedicated customer events, early registrations for tournaments and other privileges. Buyers of the AMG E 53 Hybrid will also receive direct entry into an Indian Padel Tour Grand Slam event.
