A two-storey building collapsed in Chandigarh's Industrial Area Phase 2 on Saturday, triggering a major rescue operation as authorities work to save people trapped under the debris.
Police officials said rescue teams have pulled four people out of the collapsed structure, while efforts are underway to rescue two more people believed to be trapped.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (South) Gurjit Kaur said over the phone that rescue operations are continuing. "Efforts are underway to rescue two people who are trapped under the debris," she said.
Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi said around six to seven people were inside the building when it collapsed. He said three people were rescued by rescue teams, while two others came out on their own.
He added that two people remain trapped under the debris and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is making efforts to rescue them. According to Joshi, NDRF teams have located both trapped persons, who are conscious, and are using their expertise to bring them out safely.
Joshi also said that renovation work was underway in the building at the time of the collapse.
Officials said police, the NDRF, fire tenders and other rescue teams rushed to the spot soon after the collapse. The administration has also deployed heavy earth-moving machines to clear the debris, while authorities have cordoned off the area.
According to local residents, a portion of the building, which was being used as a scrap godown, collapsed with a loud noise.
Rescue operations are continuing, and further details are awaited.
