Sunetra Pawar from the NCP created history by winning the bypolls in Maharashtra's Baramati seat with a record margin of 2,18,930 votes, the highest the constituency has ever seen. She defeated New Rashtriya Samaj Party's RY Ghutukade Sir and received a staggering over 9,000 votes in the final 24th round itself. The BJP, meanwhile, won four seats in Nagaland's Koridang, Tripura's Dharmanagar, Gujarat's Umreth, and Maharashtra's Rahuri. In Karnataka's Bagalkot, the Congress has emerged victorious, and the party is ahead in the Davanagere South constituency.
BARAMATI STATEMENT
The by-election for the seat was necessitated by the sudden death of former Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar in a plane crash in January. Days later, Sunetra Pawar took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister. Her entry into politics was driven by a sympathy wave.
The results show that she swept the seat, with a massive lead over other candidates. In 2022, BJP's Sunil Kumar Sharma received 2,14,835 votes in Uttar Pradesh's Sahibabad.
BJP's STRONG SHOW, TAKES 4 SEATS
The BJP retained Gujarat's Umreth assembly seat, defeating his nearest rival Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan of Congress by a margin of over 30,000 votes. The April 23 bypoll was necessitated due to the death of the then-sitting BJP MLA Govind Parmar on March 6 after a heart attack. The saffron side fielded Harshad Parmar, Govind Parmar's son, and this was his first major election.
In Nagaland too, the BJP held onto the Koridang seat as Daochier I Imchen defeated Independent Toshikaba by 3,123 votes. With the win, Imchen enters the assembly as the youngest legislator at 35. The by-election was necessitated due to the death of his father, Imkong L Imchen, a five-time former MLA.
The saffron side also won the Dharmanagar seat in Tripura, with Jahar Chakraborti winning by a gap of 18.920 votes over his nearest CPI(M) candidate Amitabha Datta, who polled 6,001 votes. Chayan Bahttacharya of Congress received over 5,900 votes. The bypoll was necessitated by the death of former Tripura Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen last December. With this victory, the BJP's tally in the 60-member Assembly now stands at 33.
The BJP also retained Maharashtra's Rahuri seat after its candidate Akshay Kardile defeated NCP (SP)'s Govind Mokate by a huge margin of more than 1.12 lakh votes. The by-election in this constituency was necessitated due to the death of Kardile's father and sitting MLA Shivajirao Kardile.
CONGRESS RETAIN BAGALKOT
Ruling Congress's Umesh Meti retained Karnataka's Bagalkot assembly seat by more than 22,000 votes and is on course to keep the Davanagere South as well. Samarth Mallikarjun is ahead by over 5,000 votes in the Davanagere South.
The polls were necessitated by the deaths of senior Congress MLAs HY Meti (Bagalkot) and Shamanur Shivashankarappa (Davanagere South).
