Real Madrid produced a stunning late comeback to beat AS Roma 4-3, while Manchester City suffered a 4-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in a pulsating night of Champions League action on Wednesday. Madrid scored three times in the final 10 minutes to overturn a two-goal deficit at the Stadio Olimpico, while PSG's first-half blitz proved decisive against the defending Premier League champions.
The night's action also saw Liverpool thrash LASK 6-3, with Bradley Barcola scoring a hat-trick, while Aston Villa recorded the biggest European victory in their history with a 6-0 demolition of Fenerbahce.
REAL MADRID STUN ROMA WITH LATE COMEBACK
Real Madrid staged a remarkable fightback to snatch a 4-3 victory over Roma, scoring three times in the final 10 minutes after falling two goals behind.
Marten de Roon put Roma ahead in the 20th minute, but Kylian Mbappe equalised five minutes later to keep Madrid in the contest. The hosts took control after the break, with Donyell Malen scoring twice in the 51st and 57th minutes to give Roma a commanding 3-1 lead.
Madrid, however, refused to surrender. Carlos Espi pulled one back in the 82nd minute before Endrick restored parity three minutes later. Antonio Rudiger then completed the turnaround in the 90th minute, steering home Arda Guler's inswinging corner to cap a stunning late rally.
All three of Madrid's goals in the closing stages came from corners, underlining how the visitors found a way back into a contest that had appeared beyond them.
The result also made for an emotional night for Roma manager Jose Mourinho, who received a rousing reception from the home supporters ahead of kick-off. The Portuguese coach, who led Roma to the Europa Conference League title in 2022 and the Europa League final in 2023, was honoured with banners celebrating his contribution to the club.
One banner read, "Whoever brings glory to Rome, Rome will honour forever."
MAN CITY FALL TO PSG IN ETIHAD
Manchester City suffered a 4-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, with the French side's devastating first-half display setting the tone for a high-intensity encounter.
PSG struck twice in quick succession through Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele before Vitinha added a third in the 32nd minute, leaving City with a mountain to climb at the Etihad Stadium.
City responded after the break, with Erling Haaland heading home Iliman Ndiaye's cross in the 53rd minute. The goal also saw Haaland become the fastest player to reach 60 Champions League goals, achieving the milestone in 60 appearances and surpassing Lionel Messi's previous mark of 80 games.
However, City's hopes of a comeback took another hit when Maghnes Akliouche scored with a spectacular long-range effort, despite goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma getting a hand to the shot.
Haaland struck again in the 75th minute, sweeping home Ayyoub Bouaddi's pass to reduce the deficit. But PSG held firm, with Donnarumma redeeming himself by saving a penalty from Ferran Torres.
The defeat came as City played their first home match since being found guilty of 114 breaches of financial rules. The club have denied wrongdoing and appealed the verdict, adding to the scrutiny surrounding the Premier League side.
Elsewhere, Liverpool produced a six-goal performance in a 6-3 win over Champions League newcomers LASK, with Barcola scoring a hat-trick. Ronald Araujo, Jeremie Frimpong and Lewis Koumas also found the net for Liverpool, while Florian Flecker scored twice for the Austrian hosts.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, enjoyed a historic European night with a 6-0 thrashing of Fenerbahce, recording the biggest European victory in the club's history.
