Pressure intensified on Manchester United manager Michael Carrick after his side suffered a 2-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The loss extended United's winless run to nine matches in all competitions, leaving Carrick facing fresh questions over his future as the club continued to struggle for consistency.
United's board had decided to stick with Carrick despite a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth last weekend and a 4-1 Champions League thrashing by Como earlier. However, another setback against Chelsea has done little to ease the pressure. United are provisionally 16th in the Premier League table with seven points from nine matches, just one point above the relegation zone, while Chelsea climbed to fourth with 16 points.
United had a promising start and created several opportunities in the first half, but their inability to convert chances eventually proved costly.
CHELSEA PUNISH UNITED'S MISSED CHANCES
Bruno Fernandes returned to the starting XI and captaincy after his recent fallout with Carrick. The visitors looked lively going forward, with Fernandes, Matheus Cunha and Amad all getting opportunities to break the deadlock. Cunha even found the net, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
However, United's missed chances came back to haunt them four minutes after the restart. Morgan Rogers picked up possession just inside the United half, drove through a hesitant defence and delicately lifted the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens to give Chelsea the lead.
United's task became significantly harder in the 63rd minute when Lisandro Martinez was sent off for a second yellow card after bringing down Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana inside the penalty area. The incident also handed Chelsea a penalty, giving the hosts an opportunity to put the contest beyond United's reach.
Cole Palmer stepped up and converted from the spot despite goalkeeper Lammens getting a hand to his effort. Chelsea comfortably managed the remainder of the match against 10-man United to secure all three points.
The defeat marked United's third consecutive loss and extended their winless streak to nine matches in all competitions, their longest such run since 1988. The pressure was evident at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea supporters taunted Carrick with chants of 'You'll be sacked in the morning'.
Carrick, who enjoyed a successful 12-year playing career at Manchester United, now faces an increasingly uncertain future as his team struggles to find results. Having been backed by the board ahead of the Chelsea fixture, the manager will be under further scrutiny following another damaging performance.
