Algorithm – a word that has become almost impossible to escape in the digital era. Calling it the brain of the digital world would not be an exaggeration, given how quietly yet powerfully it shapes most of what happens online. Nowhere is this more evident than on Instagram, where the algorithm has long been the invisible force deciding what millions of users see every day, often surfacing content from accounts they have never even followed.
Now, the company is apparently giving users more control over what they see on the platform. Instagram has expanded its "Your Algorithm" feature to the main Feed. Earlier, it was confined to reel feed and explore pages. The latest move will allow people to see and adjust the interests that shape their recommendations. The move marks another step in the platform's effort to hand users more control over an experience that has increasingly been driven by algorithms rather than personal choices.
The feature was previously available for Reels and Explore, but it is now being extended to Feed as well. Instagram head Adam Mosseri says this is just the beginning of a larger push towards helping users shape the platform according to their own interests rather than relying entirely on algorithms.
Instagram wants users to have more control over recommendations
The new feature lets users see the topics Instagram's recommendation system associates with their account. If the platform thinks someone is interested in areas such as travel, fitness, technology, or fashion, those topics will be visible inside the Your Algorithm section. Users can then remove topics they no longer want to see or add new interests to influence future recommendations.
According to Mosseri, recommendation algorithms have become a major part of social media over the last decade. Platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, X, Threads, and Instagram increasingly rely on AI-driven recommendations to surface content from accounts users do not necessarily follow.
While this approach has helped people discover new creators and content, Mosseri argues that it has also reduced users' sense of control. He noted that recommendation systems learn from likes, watches, shares, and interactions, but users have traditionally had limited ways to directly tell the algorithm what they actually want to see.
Instagram believes recent advances in artificial intelligence are making that possible. Mosseri explained that large language models can now interpret groups of content and translate them into topics that people can easily understand, creating a more transparent way for users to interact with recommendation systems.
More personalisation features could be coming next
Instagram says topics are only the first step. The company is already working on additional controls that could allow users to influence recommendations based on specific creators, content formats, moods, or interests.
Mosseri described the feature as more than just another settings menu, saying it reflects a broader philosophy that people should have meaningful control over the digital products they spend time using. He suggested that future AI systems may eventually allow users to personalise entire app experiences in real time.
