Bihar man comes to meet married lover, her family beats him to death

A 23-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death after he went to meet a married woman in Bihar's Gopalganj district. The killing has led to detentions, raids and a wider discussion on honour-related violence.

A 23-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death after he went to meet his married girlfriend in Bihar’s Gopalganj district. The deceased, identified as Badal Singh, had travelled to Gopalganj to meet a married woman with whom he was allegedly in a relationship for a long time. The woman, identified as Kajal Kumari, is reportedly married and the mother of a child. Sources said she had been staying at her parental home for some time due to strained relations with her husband.

According to police, Badal was a resident of Jakhra village in East Champaran district’s Motihari.

Investigators said Badal allegedly reached the woman’s house late at night when her family members caught him. He was then allegedly assaulted brutally by the woman’s relatives.

After receiving information about the incident, police rushed Badal to a hospital. However, doctors declared him dead during treatment.

The incident triggered tension in the area, following which police sent the body to the town hospital for post-mortem examination.

A forensic science laboratory (FSL) team also visited the crime scene and collected evidence as part of the investigation. Police officials said the deceased’s mobile phone is also being examined to establish the sequence of events and the nature of communication between the two.

Gopalganj Sadar SDPO-2 Rajesh Kumar said the police have detained Kajal Kumari and her mother for questioning in connection with the case. Raids are also being conducted to arrest other accused persons allegedly involved in the assault.

“Badal Kumar, a resident of Govindganj police station area in Motihari district, had come to meet his girlfriend in Majhwalia village on Saturday night. He was assaulted by the girl’s family members. Police immediately took him to hospital after receiving information, but doctors declared him dead,” the officer said.

Police said further action will be initiated after receiving a formal complaint from the victim’s family.

The incident has shocked locals and sparked discussions about honour-related violence and relationships involving married individuals in rural areas. Further investigation into the case is underway.
