Bengaluru peptide party cancellation exposes India's risky DIY wellness trend

A cancelled peptide party in Bengaluru has drawn attention to the growing use of DIY peptide therapies in India's metros. Doctors and drug experts say unregulated compounds sold as wellness shortcuts can carry serious safety risks.

What began as a niche interest among biohackers and fitness communities is increasingly finding its way into India’s urban wellness culture: peptides. Marketed as a shortcut to weight loss, muscle recovery, better skin, anti-ageing and even longer life, these compounds are now being discussed in online groups, sold through websites and wellness clinics, and, increasingly, used without proper medical supervision.

The growing fascination came into sharper focus in Bengaluru last week when a planned “Peptide Party” was cancelled after the Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration sought details from the organisers about the preparations, including their composition, manufacturers, regulatory status, dosage and intended use.

The invite-only event had reportedly attracted more than 200 registrations for about 50 spots.

The episode has highlighted a larger trend in India’s metros: the rise of DIY, or do-it-yourself, peptide therapies, where people seek out compounds themselves, decide what to take and sometimes self-inject them, often based on advice from social-media communities rather than a doctor.

The appeal is easy to understand. The huge success of semaglutide and tirzepatide – the blockbuster diabetes and weight-loss medicines, has made “peptide” sound almost synonymous with rapid results.

But that association can be dangerously misleading.

As veteran internal medicine specialist Dr Anoop Misra points out, the credibility of established peptide medicines does not automatically extend to every compound sold online under the same label.

In other words, the fact that one peptide is a scientifically proven medicine does not make another peptide safe or effective.

NOT ONE DRUG

So, what exactly are peptides?

They are short chains of amino acids, the same basic building blocks that make up proteins. In the human body, peptides perform several functions, including acting as hormones or signalling molecules.

Some peptide-based medicines are among modern medicine’s most established treatments. Insulin, for instance, is a peptide hormone used to control blood glucose in people with diabetes. The newer generation of GLP-1-based drugs has brought peptides into mainstream public attention.

Semaglutide, used in medicines such as Ozempic and Wegovy, mimics the action of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1. It helps regulate blood sugar and reduces appetite, making it useful in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Monjaro, belonging to the same class of formulation, has also demonstrated substantial benefits for diabetes and weight management.

There are other established peptide medicines too.

Teriparatide, a synthetic form of part of the parathyroid hormone, is used to treat osteoporosis and reduce fracture risk in appropriate patients. Several forms of glucagon are used to treat severe hypoglycaemia.

The important point is that these drugs did not become legitimate simply because they are peptides. They went through years of laboratory research, clinical trials, regulatory review, controlled manufacturing and post-marketing monitoring.

That is where the current DIY trend becomes problematic.

FROM MEDICINE TO BIOHACKING

A growing number of compounds marketed online are promoted for purposes such as muscle growth, faster recovery, improved sleep, fat loss, youthful skin and longevity. BPC-157, TB-500, epitalon and MOTS-c are among the names circulating in these communities.

Some are sold as “research chemicals” and may arrive in injectable vials at consumers’ homes.

But “research chemical” is not a certificate of safety. In many cases, the evidence behind the claims consists of laboratory experiments, animal studies, proposed biological mechanisms or personal anecdotes rather than robust human clinical trials.

That distinction is crucial. BPC-157, for example, has generated considerable interest because of findings from laboratory and animal research.

Yet human evidence remains limited. In July this year, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended against adding BPC-157 to its list of substances eligible for certain forms of compounding, citing inadequate evidence of safety and effectiveness.

Dr Santanu Tripathi, a senior pharmacologist who has served on scientific panels of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), told India Today, the trend was “growing and alarming."

“Any medicine developed has to follow regulatory mechanisms through scientific processes that prove and establish its safety and efficacy,” he said. Drugs, he added, should be prescribed only by registered medical practitioners.

Dr Tripathi said many DIY peptide preparations are “developed, and to some extent purified in very crude matter” and may not be fit for human use. “These therapies should be discouraged and strictly regulated,” added Dr Tripathi.

He also said he had heard of several such parties taking place, particularly in metro cities. “The problem,” added the pharmacologist, “goes beyond conventional pseudoscience. They are not even based on pseudo-science, they are based on bogus science, but unfortunately, vulnerable people are willing to try them on an experimental basis”.

RISK BEYOND RESULTS

The biggest danger is that consumers may not know precisely what they are injecting or swallowing.

Unregulated products may contain a different concentration from what is stated on the label, may be contaminated or may have deteriorated because of poor storage. Testing of some peptides obtained online has also raised concerns about contamination and discrepancies between labelled and actual quantities.

Self-injection adds another layer of risk: incorrect dosing, unsafe handling, improper dilution and infections at the injection site.

The compounds themselves may also have unpredictable effects on hormones, metabolism or organs, particularly when their long-term effects in humans have not been established.

There is another emerging concern: “stacking”, where users combine several peptides based on advice from online communities. There is often little reliable human evidence about how such combinations interact.

The peptide boom, therefore, represents two very different realities. On one side are rigorously tested medicines such as insulin, semaglutide, tirzepatide and teriparatide, whose benefits and risks have been studied through established medical and regulatory systems.

On the other are experimental compounds being repackaged as wellness shortcuts.

For people drawn to the promise of rapid fat loss, muscle gain or longevity, that distinction is crucial.
