In Short

  • NCERT adds chapter on 1975–77 Emergency to Class 9 Social Science syllabus
  • Emergency study shifted from Class 12 to Class 9 under NEP 2020
  • New textbook stresses India's constitutional and democratic values

In a significant overhaul of school education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has, for the first time, introduced the topic of the 1975–77 National Emergency in the Class 9 Social Science syllabus.

The subject has been included in Chapter 6 of the newly released Social Science textbook, Understanding Society: India and Beyond (Grade 9, Part 1), marking a major shift in the way modern Indian political history is taught at the secondary school level.

SHIFT FROM SENIOR SECONDARY TO MIDDLE SCHOOL

Until now, a detailed study of the Emergency period was largely confined to Class 12 Political Science, where students examined its political, constitutional and democratic implications.

With the latest revision, students in Class 9 will now be introduced to the Emergency era much earlier in their academic journey, reflecting NCERT's broader effort to strengthen understanding of India's constitutional values, democratic institutions and contemporary history.

PART OF WIDER NEP-DRIVEN CURRICULUM REVISION

The inclusion comes as part of NCERT's comprehensive curriculum revision in line with the National Education Policy 2020, which seeks to make school education more multidisciplinary, competency-based and rooted in India's historical and constitutional developments.

The new Social Science textbook incorporates several changes in content and approach, with greater emphasis on civic awareness, constitutional principles and critical understanding of India's democratic evolution.

51 YEARS SINCE THE EMERGENCY

The curriculum update assumes added significance as 2026 marks 51 years since the National Emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975. The Emergency remained in force until March 1977 and is regarded as one of the most consequential periods in independent India's political history, marked by the suspension of civil liberties, press censorship and the postponement of elections.

The inclusion of the Emergency in the Class 9 syllabus is expected to broaden students' understanding of this pivotal chapter in India's democratic journey at an earlier stage of their schooling.
