India, China send Bailey bridges to flood-hit Nepal: What are they?

The Nepal floods have left behind another major challenge: getting people, food and medical supplies to areas cut off from the rest of the country. More than 35 bridges have been damaged or washed away, disrupting road links across flood-hit districts. Nepal has therefore sought help from India and China to build Bailey bridges, temporary structures that can be assembled relatively quickly and used to restore connectivity.
The country has requested around 42 such bridges from its two neighbours. But why are Bailey bridges so important during a disaster, and what makes them different from ordinary bridges?
WHAT IS A BAILEY BRIDGE?
A Bailey bridge is a prefabricated, temporary bridge made from modular steel sections. The components can be transported to a damaged site and assembled there, allowing authorities to restore a road connection much faster than building a conventional permanent bridge.
That makes them particularly useful after floods, earthquakes and other disasters when existing bridges are destroyed and there is an urgent need to reopen roads.
In Nepal's case, the problem is particularly difficult because some of the damaged crossings require long-span bridges. Officials have said that simply having Bailey bridge components is not enough; the length and technical capacity required at each location also matter.
WHY DOES NEPAL NEED THEM NOW?
The floods have severely damaged road connectivity in areas including Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. With bridges gone, reaching isolated communities becomes much harder.
This affects more than everyday travel. Rescue teams need roads to reach affected areas, while trucks carrying food, medicines and other relief supplies need a route in. Restoring crossings can also help evacuate people and reconnect communities with nearby towns.
Nepal has asked India and China for around 42 Bailey bridges as part of its effort to reconnect flood-hit areas.
WHY CAN'T NEPAL JUST USE ITS EXISTING BRIDGES?
The challenge is the scale of the damage. Some crossings need structures that are much longer than the Bailey bridges already available in Nepal.
Nepal's infrastructure ministry has said several damaged crossings require spans of more than 70 metres, while the country does not have enough bridges of those lengths in its existing stock. This is why Kathmandu is looking to India, China and other sources for longer structures.
India has already begun assistance to Nepal, including relief supplies and technical support. Nepal has also formally sought Bailey bridge assistance from both neighbours.
WHY ARE BAILEY BRIDGES USEFUL AFTER FLOODS?
The biggest advantage is speed. Unlike a conventional bridge, a Bailey bridge uses standardised components that can be assembled at the site.
For a country dealing with destroyed roads, damaged infrastructure and isolated communities, that speed can make a real difference. These bridges are not necessarily the final solution. They can act as a vital link until permanent infrastructure is rebuilt.
For Nepal, therefore, the Bailey bridge is more than a temporary crossing. It is a way to reopen the roads that relief teams need most.
