Netflix has pulled the plug on The Boroughs, the science fiction drama executive produced by Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, after just one season.

The cancellation comes only months after the series debuted on the streaming platform in May 2026, shortly following the release of the final season of Stranger Things. Despite generating nearly 19 million views within its first 18 days, the show will not return for a second outing, bringing an abrupt end to plans for a larger story arc.

Why has Netflix cancelled The Boroughs?

While Netflix has not publicly explained the decision, The Boroughs reportedly carried a hefty production budget due to its visual effects-heavy storyline. Industry observers often point to viewership figures, production costs and audience retention when assessing renewal prospects.

The series had been developed with a three-season plan in mind, and a writers’ room for Season 2 had already been established before the cancellation was confirmed.

What was The Boroughs about?

Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, The Boroughs followed a group of residents at a retirement community who find themselves facing an otherworldly threat.

According to the official synopsis, the unlikely heroes must “band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have time”.

The show quickly drew comparisons to Stranger Things, with many describing it as a supernatural mystery centred on older characters rather than teenagers.

Who starred in the Netflix series?

The ensemble cast featured Alfred Molina and Alfre Woodard in leading roles, alongside Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, Carlos Miranda, Jena Malone, Seth Numrich, Alice Kremelberg and Geena Davis.

Speaking to Variety in May about the possibility of another season, Molina expressed optimism about the show’s future. “I would love to carry this on. I would love for this to be ongoing,” he said at the time.

The cancellation comes as Netflix continues to back other projects connected to the Stranger Things universe. The streamer recently renewed animated spin-off Tales From ’85 for a second season, alongside freshman series including Little House on the Prairie, The Hunting Wives and Leanne.
