A Class 9 student was stabbed to death in Delhi by three juveniles after a dispute over his friendship with a girl from his school, police said on Friday.

Police said the three juveniles were detained within hours of the incident, which took place in Nangloi on Thursday afternoon as the 15-year-old boy was returning home from school with the girl and some of his friends.

According to police, three boys first intercepted the group and questioned the girl about her friendship with the victim. After a brief altercation, the teenager and his friends continued on their way home.

"Around 15 to 20 minutes later, the same three boys intercepted them again and started an argument over the teenager's friendship with the girl, who was also present during the initial confrontation," a police officer said.

The officer said one of the juveniles stabbed the boy in the right thigh with a knife before fleeing with his two associates.

A PCR call about the boy being admitted with a stab injury was received at Nangloi police station from Sonia Hospital around 1:50 pm, he said.

A police team reached the hospital and found the victim with a stab wound measuring about 3x1.5 inches. "He died due to excessive blood loss," the officer added.

Police said a case under relevant provisions of the law, including murder, has been registered at Nangloi police station. The body was handed over to the victim's family after a post-mortem on Friday.

Police said further investigation is under way to establish the sequence of events and the exact circumstances that led to the stabbing.
