A case involving the sexual abuse of a three-year-old nursery student at a private school in Delhi has come to light, with police arresting a school bus driver in connection with the case.
The accused, Vikas, had been working as a school bus driver for around eight months. Police said he befriended the child by offering her chocolates and sexually abused her on multiple occasions.
The incident from Bawana, the industrial hub in the northwest Delhi.
CHILD IDENTIFIES BUS DRIVER
The incident came to light on the night of August 19, when the child's family noticed injury marks and became concerned. When the mother questioned her daughter, the child reportedly referred to a "bad uncle" at school who used to give her chocolates.
As the child was unable to identify the man by name, the family informed the school administration and sought its assistance in identifying the person.
On August 24, the child was shown photographs and CCTV footage from the school premises. Police said she identified Vikas as the person she had referred to.
The school subsequently informed the police, following which an FIR was registered under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Police arrested Vikas from the school premises and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
CCTV FOOTAGE UNDER SCANNER
During the investigation, police examined CCTV footage from the school. Investigators found footage showing Vikas carrying chocolates while moving around the premises.
According to the preliminary investigation, the accused followed the child when she went towards the bathroom, offered her chocolate and took her to an area under the stairs, where the sexual abuse took place.
Police said the preliminary investigation indicates that the child was sexually abused on four occasions.
Authorities have taken possession of CCTV footage from the school to establish the sequence of events and determine whether the accused had approached other children in a similar manner.
PHONE SEIZED, OTHER CHILDREN BEING IDENTIFIED
Police have also seized Vikas's mobile phone as part of the investigation. During examination of the device, investigators found several videos showing him feeding chocolates to young children.
Police are working to identify the children appearing in the videos and are conducting counselling as part of the investigation.
Officials are also examining whether the videos have any connection to the case involving the three-year-old girl or indicate that other children may have been targeted.
The investigation is ongoing, with police examining the CCTV footage, electronic evidence and statements from the child's family and school authorities. The accused has been arrested as the probe continues under the POCSO Act.
