India will be without Jasprit Bumrah for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka after the pace spearhead failed to recover fully from a knee injury. The setback comes as the visitors battle a growing injury list ahead of the World Test Championship clash.

India have suffered a major blow ahead of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka after Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out with a knee injury. The pace spearhead has failed to recover in time despite undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.

Bumrah had been named in India's squad subject to clearing his fitness assessment, with multiple reports initially suggesting that he had successfully completed the required tests. However, lingering discomfort in his left knee prompted the BCCI medical team to rule him out rather than risk aggravating the injury.

The 32-year-old sustained an impact injury to his left knee while fielding during the second ODI against England in Cardiff, resulting in reactive swelling. The injury forced him to miss the third and final ODI at Lord's before he began his rehabilitation at the CoE.

As part of his recovery, Bumrah received an injection last month after the medical team felt it would aid the healing process. While there were discussions over making him available for the second Test in Colombo, the recovery has taken longer than anticipated, ending any hopes of his return for the series.

PROBLEMS KEEP GROWING FOR INDIA

Bumrah's absence further complicates India's preparations for the series, which begins in Galle on August 15.

Led by Shubman Gill, India head into the tour sitting fifth in the World Test Championship standings, one place above Sri Lanka. With valuable WTC points on offer, the visitors can ill-afford another setback after an injury-hit build-up.

INJURY WOES CONTINUE

Bumrah's absence adds to a growing injury list that has disrupted India's preparations. Harshit Rana has already been ruled out with a hamstring injury, while Nitish Kumar Reddy is continuing his recovery from a quadriceps issue. Washington Sundar will also miss the opening Test after suffering a hamstring injury, prompting selectors to call up off-spin all-rounder Saransh Jain following his impressive domestic season and India A performances.

Fast bowler Akash Deep also remains unavailable as he continues to recover from stress reactions in his back.

Without Bumrah, India will once again have to reshape their pace attack as they look to begin the Sri Lanka series on a winning note despite mounting fitness concerns.
