Afghanistan legend Mohammad Nabi to retire from ODIs after Champions Trophy

Afghanistan cricket legend Mohammad Nabi is set to retire from ODIs after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan. The all-rounder will continue his T20 career, marking the end of an illustrious ODI journey since 2009.

Afghanistan legend Mohammad Nabi will be stepping away from the ODI format after the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan. Nabi is considered to be one of the true greats of Afghanistan and made his debut during the nation's first match in 2009 and scored a vital half-century on his debut against Scotland.

Nabi has been a part of Afghanistan's first-ever teams in Tests and T20Is as well and was their captain from 2013-15. After a poor run of form made his decide to relinquish the post, the 39-year-old has remained a vital cog in the team with both bat and ball and played in the last 3 ODI World Cups.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Afghanistan Cricket Board chief executive Naseeb Khan confirmed that Nabi had told the board his desire to retire from the 50-over format after the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Khan said that ACB has welcomed Nabi's call and the all-rounder is expected to continue his T20 career.

"Yes, Nabi is retiring from ODIs after the Champions Trophy and he informed the board about his desire," Naseeb told Cricbuzz. "He told me few months back that he wants to end his ODI career after the Champions Trophy and we welcome his decision. After the Champions Trophy, what I understand is that, he is expected to continue his T20 career, and that is the plan until now," he added.

Nabi's record in ODIs

In the 165 matches Nabi has played so far, the all-rounder has scored 3549 runs with 2 hundreds and 17 fifties to his name. Nabi has also taken 171 wickets during this time, with one 5-wicket haul to his name. Nabi recently played a crucial role for Afghanistan in their win over Bangladesh.

Nabi played a superb innings, scoring 82 runs to set up a competitive total for his team, which was successfully defended thanks to Allah Ghazanfar’s impressive six-wicket haul. The all-rounder would also pick up the wicket of Bangladesh skipper Najimul Shanto, which proved to be turning point in the game.

Nabi had already retired from the Test format in 2019.
