- Plot features fest revival, personal motives, and campus chaos
The trailer of the upcoming Malayalam film Athiradi was unveiled on Tuesday, setting the stage for a college campus story where a festival revival spirals into chaos. Starring Tovino Thomas, Basil Joseph, Riya Shibu and Vineeth Sreenivasan, the film is slated for a May 14 theatrical release.
At its core, Athiradi revolves around the return of a once-popular college fest. The trailer introduces Basil Joseph as Samkutty, a student determined to bring the event back. However, his motivations seem personal as much as they are nostalgic, with hints that he takes on the challenge to impress Riya Shibu’s character.
Things take a turn when Samkutty crosses paths with Tovino Thomas’s character, a soft-spoken yet menacing goon. What begins as a clash of egos soon escalates into a larger conflict, setting off a chain of events that blends action, comedy, romance and campus confusion.

The film also features Zarin Shihab and others, and marks the directorial debut of Arun Anirudhan. Notably, Arun had earlier co-written Minnal Murali, which starred Tovino and was directed by Basil. With Athiradi, the duo reunite on screen as actors.
Meanwhile, Tovino Thomas will next be seen alongside Nazriya Nazim in Gracias El Clasico. The film made headlines for its unconventional announcement, with its poster unveiled during an El Clasico match between Barcelona and Real Madrid.
