Kangana Ranaut's Emergency gets censor certificate, release date announcement soon

Actor Kangana Ranaut announced that her film, Emergency, has been cleared by the censor board for screening.

Actor Kangana Ranaut on Thursday announced that her film, Emergency, was finally cleared by the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for screening. In a post dated October 17 on X, the actor mentioned that the film's team has received the censor certificate, and they will soon announce the final release date of the film. The actor also thanked her fans and well-wishers for their support and love.

"We are glad to announce we have received the censor certificate for our movie Emergency, we will be announcing the release date soon. Thank you for your patience and support (sic)," she wrote on social media.

The decision comes days after it was reported that Zee Studios, the production company backing the film, told the Bombay High Court that they had agreed to make all the modifications and deletions as suggested by the board's revising committee.

The board issued around 13 cuts and changes to the film, passing the content with a U/A certificate. The revising committee told the makers to comply with the changes and obtain the certificate for its release in theatres. The list of cuts included removal of a few violent scenes, and a reference to Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale as 'saint or sant' in a dialogue. The decision was made following multiple complaints by several Sikh groups, alleging that the film showed the Sikh community in a bad light.

Earlier, sources close to the film exclusively told India Today Digital that the makers will be releasing Emergency after Punjab elections in November. The source said, "After agreeing to all the terms of CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification), the team will most likely release the film after the Punjab elections. The film is really close to everyone's heart and the audience should get to watch the film. So, after much consideration and not to hurt anyone's sentiments, the whole team decided that once the elections are over, they will decide on a suitable day and release the film. Releasing the film during a calmer time seems the best decision for now."

The film was initially scheduled for release on September 6 this year. Based on the period of emergency from June 1975 to March 1977 in India, Emergency is directed by Kangana. She also plays the role of former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, in the film. The actor is joined by the likes of Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, and the late actor Satish Kaushik in Emergency.
