Star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya will don Baroda's colors for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024, playing under the captaincy of his elder brother, Krunal Pandya. The tournament is set to kick off on November 23, a day before the IPL 2024 mega auction takes place in Jeddah.

This marks Hardik's return to domestic cricket after a considerable hiatus. His last appearance for Baroda was during the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season, while his previous outing in SMAT dates back to January 2016. Notably, that match against Uttar Pradesh in the final was pivotal in Hardik's rise, as it preceded his T20I debut for India by less than a week.

Hardik's absence from domestic cricket over the years can be attributed to clashing international commitments and recurring injuries. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently mandated that centrally contracted players participate in domestic tournaments whenever available. This directive aligns with Hardik's inclusion in the Baroda squad for SMAT, ensuring his contribution to his state side.

Baroda, led by Krunal, had an impressive run in the previous SMAT season, reaching the final before losing to Punjab in Mohali. The addition of Hardik to the team is expected to bolster their chances in a competitive Group B, which includes formidable sides like Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Karnataka, alongside Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Tripura.

Hardik's decision to play comes at a crucial juncture. Last month, he was retained as the captain of Mumbai Indians in the IPL, while Krunal was released by Lucknow Super Giants and will enter the upcoming auction. Hardik also recently featured in the T20I series in South Africa and has been active in Mumbai Indians' training sessions, showcasing his readiness for the upcoming season.

Baroda has been in fine form this domestic season, topping Group A in the Ranji Trophy's first phase with 27 points. With Hardik's presence adding firepower to their lineup, the team looks poised for a strong campaign in SMAT.

The Pandya brothers' reunion on the cricket field promises to be a treat for fans and a pivotal moment for Baroda as they chase domestic glory.
