India bags 1 gold and 3 bronze medals at Linguistics Olympiad in Romania

India won one gold and three bronze medals at the International Linguistics Olympiad 2026 in Romania. The result extends the country's strong record and highlights rising talent in logic-based language problem-solving.

India had a strong showing at the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) 2026 in Romania, with Shrilakshmi Venkatraman taking home the gold medal. Aarav Anil Rao, Nishanth Shankar Lakshmanan and Advay Misra also made the podium with bronze medals, while Soham Amit Pednekar earned an honourable mention.

The international competition attracts pre-university students from more than 40 countries. Instead of testing memorised knowledge, the Olympiad asks participants to decode unfamiliar languages and identify patterns using reasoning and analytical skills.

India has been participating in the International Linguistics Olympiad since 2009 and has steadily built a strong record at the competition. According to the Panini Linguistics Olympiad (PLO) at IIIT Hyderabad, Indian students have won a total of 37 medals so far. The tally includes six gold medals, nine silver medals and 22 bronze medals.

Indian participants have also earned nine ‘best solution’ awards and 19 honourable mentions, apart from several other honours awarded at the team level.

HOW THE 2026 INDIAN TEAM WAS SELECTED

The students who represented India in the 2026 competition were selected through the Panini Linguistics Olympiad, the national programme used to identify and train students for the International Linguistics Olympiad.

The selection exercise began with registrations in November 2025. The first major stage was the national qualifying contest conducted in February 2026.

A total of 525 entries were received for the first round, while 338 students appeared for the qualifying examination. Students who performed well progressed to the second round and subsequently participated in an invitational camp.

The final preparation phase included a 10-day residential camp organised at the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H) from May 31 to June 10.

INTENSIVE TRAINING BEFORE THE INTERNATIONAL CONTEST

The residential camp gave shortlisted students an opportunity to strengthen their problem-solving and analytical abilities. The programme included lectures, mentoring sessions, practice problems, mock Olympiads and regular evaluations.

The final team was selected based on the students’ performance in the second-round test. The two teams emerging from the selection process then took part in an intensive boot camp before travelling to Romania for the International Linguistics Olympiad.

Professor Parameswari Krishnamurthy of IIIT Hyderabad led the Indian delegation. She is also involved in coordinating the Panini Linguistics Olympiad.

IIIT Hyderabad has mentored the Panini Linguistics Olympiad since 2015 through its Language Technologies Research Centre. The programme works with academic institutions including IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Patna, IIT Indore and IISc Bengaluru to train students for national and international competitions.

THE OLYMPIAD TESTS LOGIC RATHER THAN MEMORY

The International Linguistics Olympiad is different from many conventional subject-based Olympiads. Participants are not expected to have extensive prior knowledge of linguistics.

Instead, contestants are presented with examples from unfamiliar languages and asked to work out the rules and patterns hidden within them. The problems may involve grammar, pronunciation systems, sentence structures or other features of language.

Students must analyse the available information, identify relationships and develop logical solutions. This makes the competition particularly focused on pattern recognition, analytical reasoning and computational thinking.

The analytical skills developed through the Olympiad can also support careers in artificial intelligence, natural language processing and language technology. Several former PLO participants have gone on to pursue higher studies and careers in these fields.

India’s 2026 performance in Romania further strengthens its record at the competition and highlights growing interest in linguistics-based problem-solving among Indian students.
