Indian Railways has approved the Rs 993 crore Arakkonam-Chengalpattu doubling project, giving a major push to the Chennai suburban rail network. The 68-km project under Southern Railway is expected to reduce congestion, improve punctuality and make passenger as well as freight train movement smoother across one of Tamil Nadu’s busiest rail corridors.
The route connects Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu and Arakkonam, and is widely used by suburban commuters, long-distance trains and freight services.
Railway officials say the project comes at a time when traffic on the existing single-line section is running close to full capacity, with demand expected to rise further in the coming years.
WHY THE PROJECT MATTERS
The Arakkonam-Chengalpattu doubling project is part of the larger Chennai suburban circular rail network. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project will help ease pressure on the busy suburban rail system while improving operational efficiency and train punctuality.
He also said the project will strengthen freight movement in the region, especially for commodities such as cement, automobiles, foodgrains, iron and steel.
At present, the existing rail section handles heavy passenger and freight traffic daily. Officials believe doubling the line will help reduce delays and improve train frequency in the long run.
BOOST FOR INDUSTRIAL CORRIDORS
The railway corridor passes through several industrial and economic hubs including Mahindra World City, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and Irungattukottai. These areas house automobile plants, manufacturing units and logistics centres that depend heavily on rail connectivity.
The upcoming Parandur airport project near Kancheepuram also adds importance to the route, as better rail infrastructure could improve future connectivity for both passengers and cargo movement.
GROWING DEMAND IN CHENNAI SUBURBS
Residents in Chennai’s western suburbs have welcomed the project announcement, saying railway infrastructure needs to keep pace with rapid urban growth and increasing real estate activity in the region.
Many commuters are also expecting better suburban train services and reduced waiting time at crossings once the doubling work is completed.
Railways said the project is aimed at creating safer, faster and more efficient rail transportation while supporting future passenger and freight demand across Tamil Nadu.
