Lionel Messi produced another World Cup masterclass as Argentina began their title defence with a 3-0 victory over Algeria in Kansas City on Tuesday, scoring a historic hat-trick to equal Miroslav Klose's all-time men's World Cup goals record.
Making his 200th appearance for Argentina and appearing at a record sixth FIFA World Cup, Messi delivered a performance that rolled back the years and reaffirmed his status as football's greatest showman.
Argentina vs Algeria, FIFA World Cup 2026: UPDATES
The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner entered the match with 13 World Cup goals, level with French legend Just Fontaine. By the end of the night, he had surged past Fontaine, drawn level with Gerd Muller, Kylian Mbappe and Ronaldo Nazario, and finally matched Klose's long-standing record of 16 goals.
Argentina's breakthrough arrived in the 17th minute after a frenetic start in which both sides had goals ruled out. Alexis Mac Allister split the Algerian defence with a perfectly weighted pass and Messi timed his run to perfection before curling a left-footed effort beyond goalkeeper Luca Zidane and into the top corner.
The goal took Messi to 14 World Cup strikes, moving him level with Mbappe and Muller in third place on the all-time scoring charts.
Messi doubled Argentina's lead in the 60th minute after reacting quickest when Zidane spilled a shot from Mac Allister. The Argentine captain pounced on the loose ball and calmly converted from close range to move within one goal of Ronaldo's tally.
With Algeria struggling to contain him, Messi completed his first World Cup hat-trick in the 77th minute. Nico Gonzalez squared the ball to him on the edge of the penalty area and, with one touch to create space, Messi whipped a trademark left-footed finish into the corner to make it 3-0.
The strike took him to 16 World Cup goals, drawing level with Klose at the summit of the tournament's all-time scoring list.
Messi's opener was also his fifth World Cup goal from outside the penalty area, equalling Brazilian great Rivelino's record for the most such goals since 1966.
The Argentina captain received a standing ovation when he was substituted two minutes after completing his hat-trick, with the result already beyond doubt and the crowd fully aware they had witnessed another chapter in an extraordinary career.
Messi's World Cup journey began in Germany in 2006 when he scored on his tournament debut against Serbia and Montenegro as a teenager. Twenty years later, he remains the heartbeat of Argentina's ambitions.
The reigning champions still have two group-stage matches remaining, giving Messi the opportunity to move clear of Klose and claim sole ownership of one of the World Cup's most cherished records.
