Bhubaneswar: The 11th World Neighbours Day was celebrated at Shyamsundarpur village under Daruthenga Panchayat on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar on Thursday, with a special awareness meeting highlighting the importance of strong neighbourhood relationships, mutual support and community harmony.
The programme began with tributes to Late Radhakanta Tripathy, a Supreme Court advocate and prominent human rights activist who founded World Neighbours Day. Participants remembered his contribution and the vision behind the observance, which aims to strengthen bonds among neighbours and promote a more caring and united society.
Addressing the gathering, participants emphasised that neighbours are an extension of one’s family and often provide the first line of support during emergencies and difficult times.
They observed that in today’s fast-paced world, people frequently communicate with friends and relatives living thousands of kilometres away through mobile phones and social media, yet often remain unfamiliar with the people living next door.
The observance seeks to bridge this growing social gap by encouraging people to reconnect with their neighbours, build trust and revive the spirit of togetherness that once defined community life.

The message for this year’s celebration was “Good Neighbours, Beautiful Society,” highlighting the role of positive neighbourhood relationships in creating a peaceful and harmonious society.
A meeting was organised by the villagers to discuss ways to strengthen relationships among residents and restore the traditional spirit of community living.
Participants recalled how neighbours in earlier times lived like members of one extended family, sharing one another’s joys and sorrows and standing together during difficult situations. They expressed concern that such close relationships have gradually weakened amid changing lifestyles and growing social distances.
During the meeting, villagers pledged to rebuild these bonds, support one another and promote a stronger sense of unity within the community.
The celebration concluded with a collective commitment to strengthen neighbourhood relationships and foster a society built on compassion, trust and solidarity.
