Bhubaneswar: Grieving households of legal practitioners across Odisha will now receive twice the financial assistance following a major revision to the state’s statutory safety net for advocates.
The state Law Department formally notified an amendment modifying the Schedule of the Odisha Advocates’ Welfare Fund Act, 1987. The regulatory change was executed invoking statutory powers under Sections 9 and 16, interpreted alongside Section 16-B of the legislation, with direct consideration given to the financial resources available in the trust corpus.

The upward revision originated from a formal proposal submitted by the Odisha Advocates’ Welfare Fund Trust Committee, which recommended reinforcing social security protections across the state’s legal community.
Under the updated framework, the specific payout credited to a deceased lawyer’s beneficiaries scales according to the total number of completed years the practitioner logged in the profession. The reform also incorporates an explicit, dedicated provision tailored to cover advocates who had accumulated less than five years of active practice prior to their death.
State authorities framed the decision as a targeted effort to provide deeper fiscal relief to surviving kin during crises, establishing a more durable social security cushion for practitioners serving Odisha’s justice system.
